10 Tips to Better PR
This is my second installment
detailing tips you can use to promote your
business. These are tips I’ve gleaned from
webinars hosted by top professionals in the
industry. But I want you to succeed as well
as I have (and more!) so I’ll continue sharing
these ideas with you.

Here are 10 tips to a better PR article:
1. Be professional – nothing goofy, no gimmicks.
2. Not promotional – not an ad, don’t be obvious
that you’re seeking exposure, you need to be objective
3. Not Boring – be creative, customers like
knowing that there’s a human talking to them
4. Be brief – short sentences, only give the
info needed, limit it to one page
5. Know your recipient – know who to give
your press release to (i.e. food critic, city editor, etc.)
6. Use the Right tense – If you’re doing hard
news: use past tense, if soft news: present tense
7. Think visually – it needs to look good, not
just the font, but the layout of words, long
paragraphs are daunting, keep them short
8. Tell a story – Answer these questions: who, what,
where, when, why, how … (Check out www.pointer.org
and search for "inverted pyramid,"
9. Don’t lie – journalists don’t like being lied
to, they’re trained to discover the truth so
don’t inflate sales numbers because they’ll
publicize your lies
10. Know your limitations – not everyone can
write a press release. If you need to, hire a professional
